The Grid Within
The Grid Within is an experimental installation that investigates the relationship between human innovation and nature, expressed through the geometry of the grid. The artist employs steel beams to create six dynamic sculptures that reinterpret the cylindrical pipes found in the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Fine Arts Hall in Riyadh. This interplay highlights the dualities of visibility and invisibility, exploring how these elements influence perception.
The grid has long served as a cornerstone in the geometry of nature, art, architecture, technology, and urban planning. While once a tangible and visible structure, it has since become an intangible framework, ingrained in our collective consciousness and systems of creation. This installation invites viewers to consider how the grid shapes the way we see and design the world, challenging them to reflect on its presence both within and around us.
The fabrication of The Grid Within involved meticulous planning and execution. Steel beams were cut, welded, and finished to achieve precise alignment, reflecting the perfection of geometric grids. The design process integrated advanced 3D modeling software to ensure the sculptures’ structural integrity and alignment with the artist’s vision. Each piece was assembled on-site to harmonize with the hall’s architectural elements, creating a dialogue between the installation and its environment.
Through this work, the artist examines the interplay between our internalized perception of the grid and its omnipresent role in shaping our reality, asking: how does the grid exist within us, and how do we coexist with it?
