The Great Sail

The Great Sail is a magnificent project envisioned to be a landmark for a Corniche by the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. Art in Public Space was asked to design an artwork for the said Corniche by KEO International Consultants and through a long and ardous project, whereby many initial concepts have been constantly refined and perfected, we have managed to create a project befitting the Client’s requirements.

The magnitude of this project and its symbollism fits perfectly into the conceptual frames laid out by the Client. This installation is both a meeting place and a landmark, through its positioning visible from the incoming and outgoing planes. The traditional Arabic Dhow, so prevalent in the culture and appearing even on the currency notes, has found its way to be transformed into a modern and monumental installation, whilst paying homage to the past.

People visiting the corniche, will be instantly drawn to the Sail, where they will be able to comfortably sit and spend time with their families, whilst being illumined by the subtle lights from the top and bottom. The entire area within the installation will be defined by a beautiful haze of opalescensce, making for the perfect contemplative and subtle experience.
